dewantaraBIMC Hospital and Yayasan Kemanusiaan Indonesia collaborated for the treatment of 4 year old Putu Gede Dewantara from Gianyar. The child broke his left elbow after falling down from his bike. His parents took him to a near medical centre and the doctors took an x-ray of the elbow. His father was quite surprised when he was told his son needed surgery to treat the fractured arm. Surgery is costly for this simple family. Luckily he was told to contact Yayasan Kemanusiaan Indonesia.

Volunteers from Yayasan Kemanusiaan Indonesia quickly contacted BIMC Hospital for an assessment. Orthopedic surgeon, dr. Bramantya Karna, SpOT was consulted and the diagnosis was a closed fracture of the left supracondylar humerus. This is one of the most common type of elbow fracture in children. If not treated well, this type of fracture may cause permanent effects on the child which can affect their arm movement and strength. The recommended treatment was definitely surgery. Immediately the BIMC team arranged for surgery.

After pre-surgery preparation, the surgery took place on 8 April 2009 at the 2nd floor Operating Theatre. The surgery was successfull. Little Putu was hospitalized for 1 night. He was sent home with an arm sling. The doctor is confident he will soon be able to be an active boy again.
