What is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?

A state of periodic airway obstruction during sleep that causes intermittent breathing stops, either complete (Apnea: occurs when respiratory arrest lasts for >10 seconds), or partial (hypoapnea: a state of airflow reduction of about 30%, lasting 10 seconds and there is a 4% decrease in blood oxygen saturation).

What are the signs and symptoms of OSA?

  • Loud snoring
  • Often feel like fainting (Pre-Syncope)
  • Excessive drowsiness and difficulty concentrating during the day
  • There are episodes of respiratory arrest observed by others during sleep
  • Sudden awakenings accompanied by gasping/choking
  • Waking up with dry mouth/sore throat
  • Headache in the morning
  • Mood swings, such as depression/anger
  • High blood pressure
  • Decreased libido

What are the complications that can be caused?

Sleep disorders: decreased short-term memory, work and motor vehicle accidents, loss of energy throughout the day, morning headaches, weight gain, mood disorders and depression, impotence and decreased sexual intercourse

Hypertension: which will increase the risk for heart arrhythmia, heart attack, stroke and stress on the cardiovascular system because OSA causes the heart and lungs to work hard.

What tests can help diagnose OSA?

Sleep test is an examination used to assess the quality of sleep and detect the presence or absence of sleep apnea. The sleep test used at BIMC Nusa Dua uses 5 recording components consisting of breathing rhythm, breathing rate, snoring, blood oxygen saturation level, and heart rhythm to accurately diagnose sleep apnea and its severity.

How to treat OSA?

Some ways to treat OSA include:

  • Diet
  • Surgery
  • Handling using positive airway pressure (PAP) is a therapy that does not require the administration of drugs or surgery but rather flows air at a certain pressure through a nasal mask. The type of PAP that is often used is Coninuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).

When should you see a doctor?

If there is snoring loud enough to disturb your sleep or others:

  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Breathing stops during sleep
  • Experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness (which can cause you to fall asleep at work, watching television or even while driving a vehicle)
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Frequent feeling of fainting (Pre-syncope)
